September Private Jet Flight Activity: What The Numbers Actually Tell Us

North American private jet activity grew 0.9% year over year in September, according to ARGUS TRAQPak. That doesn't sound like much. But ARGUS had forecast a 0.1% decline, which would have been the first negative month of 2026. Instead it went the other way, and ARGUS expects 1.1% growth in October.

The headline number is fine. The more interesting part is underneath it, in who is flying and how they're flying

Fractional flights were up 7.2% and Part 135 charter was up 3.0%. Part 91 flying, which is mostly owners flying their own aircraft, was down 3.4%.

My read on that is simple. More people want the private aviation experience without the cost and commitment of owning the aircraft. Ownership comes with crew, hangar, maintenance and an asset that sits on the ground a lot of the time. Charter and fractional let you pay for the flying you actually do. I'd expect that gap to keep widening.

Large cabin flights were down 7.0% overall, the biggest drop of any category. But the only large cabin growth came from fractional, up 13.9%, while Part 91 large cabin flights fell 13.3%.

To me, that points to a slow consolidation, especially in the larger cabins. People are moving toward less capital-intensive options than owning a Part 91 aircraft. Does that signal something bigger? I think it could. It may show owners stepping away from pure ownership and looking for a more convenient way to keep flying the same kind of aircraft, without the crew, hangar, maintenance and capital tied up in a plane of their own. It's one month of data, but it's a trend I'll be watching.

The overall growth also seems to come from people choosing smaller aircraft with real consistency. Turboprops were up 4.8% and small cabin jets were up 3.6%, while midsize dipped 1.1% and large cabin fell 7.0%. Within Part 135 charter, turboprops grew 7.5%.

On a short regional trip, a good turboprop or light jet is often the smartest option: lower cost, access to shorter runways, and very little difference in total trip time. More clients are asking whether they really need a bigger aircraft for the trip they're taking, and that's a good question to ask.

Month over month, the Northeast was down 16.9% and the Caribbean down 14.4%, while the South and Southwest each jumped by double digits. That lines up with the end of summer in the Northeast and the middle of hurricane season in the Caribbean, as aircraft and demand start shifting south for the fall and winter.

ARGUS described demand as holding firm heading into what is usually a busy Q4, while also noting some areas of concern. From a broker's perspective, here's what I'd tell anyone planning to fly before year end:

  • Book holiday travel early. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's are always the tightest weeks, and with charter and fractional both growing, the best aircraft go first.
  • Be flexible on aircraft. If your first choice isn't available, a good broker should show you the real tradeoffs of the alternatives, not just the next name on a list.
  • Check how the operator flies, not just the price. Growth brings in more capacity, and not all of it is equal. Ask about third-party safety ratings like ARGUS and Wyvern, and confirm the flight is operating under a Part 135 certificate.

The market didn't just hold up in September. It moved toward charter and fractional, toward turboprops on short trips, and toward a busy end of the year. If you're planning to fly in the next few months, the earlier you start the conversation, the more options you'll have.
