Can Pets Fly on a Private Jet?

Pets travel in the passenger cabin on private jets, never in a cargo hold. No breed ban applies, and there is no size or weight limit on the animal. Most operators permit pets with advance notice confirmed at booking. For domestic US travel, a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian is recommended. International travel requires a health certificate issued within 10 days of departure plus documentation that varies by country. Hogani Jets confirms the operator's pet policy and any documentation requirements at booking.

Private jets are one of the most practical ways to travel with pets. There is no cargo hold, no airline breed ban, and no size or weight limit on the animal. There is no shared terminal where other passengers may react to your pet.

The practical considerations are documentation, operator policy, and destination country entry requirements. All three are manageable with the right lead time.

Pets travel in the passenger cabin. There is no separate cargo area for animals. Your dog or cat sits beside you, on your lap, or in a carrier at your feet, wherever is comfortable for both of you and reasonable for the aircraft.

Larger dogs travel freely in the cabin. There is no size or breed restriction equivalent to commercial airline policies. A Great Dane can travel on a midsize jet. French Bulldogs, banned from cargo holds on commercial carriers, travel comfortably in the cabin at altitude.

The only considerations are the operator's pet policy and the destination country's entry requirements.

Most Part 135 operators permit pets with advance notice. Some operators restrict pets on specific aircraft due to cabin upholstery or documented allergy concerns from prior clients. A small number of operators do not permit pets at all.

This is why Hogani Jets must be informed of any pet at booking. Hogani Jets confirms the operator's pet policy before presenting the aircraft. An operator who permits pets is matched to your booking. An operator who does not permit pets will not be presented as an option.

There is no standard fee for pets on private jets. Most operators accommodate pets as part of the standard booking. If an operator charges a cleaning surcharge for pets, Hogani Jets discloses this at the time of booking.

Inform Hogani Jets of any pet travelling on the charter at the time of inquiry, not as an afterthought. Provide the following at inquiry. Include species and breed, plus approximate size and weight.

Note whether the animal travels in a carrier or moves freely. Include any behavioral notes relevant to the cabin environment. Provide the destination country for any international routing.

Hogani Jets confirms the operator's pet policy, the cabin setup, and documentation requirements for the route at booking. This avoids arriving at the FBO with a dog and an aircraft whose operator does not permit pets.

For domestic US charter travel, there is no federal requirement for a health certificate. Most operators and FBOs appreciate confirmation that the animal is current on vaccinations. Some states require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) for animals crossing state lines.

Best practice: obtain a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian before any domestic charter with a pet. This is a standard one-page document confirming the animal is healthy, current on vaccines, and fit to travel. It takes one vet visit and covers most practical requirements.

Hawaii (Domestic US)

Hawaii is a domestic US destination with its own strict pet import rules, as it is also rabies-free. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture operates a five-day or less airport quarantine programme for qualifying animals. Requirements include a microchip, two valid rabies vaccinations, and a FAVN antibody test at least 90 days before arrival.

Animals that do not meet these requirements face a 120-day quarantine. The FAVN test and 90-day lead time require planning at least 4 to 5 months before Hawaii travel. This applies regardless of whether the travel is by private jet or commercial airline.

International travel with pets requires significantly more documentation than domestic. The requirements vary by destination country and must be confirmed well in advance.

Mexico and Caribbean

A health certificate from a USDA-accredited vet endorsed by USDA APHIS, current rabies vaccination, and a microchip are required. Most Caribbean islands process entry at the airport without advance permit requirements. Lead time: 2 to 3 weeks to prepare documentation correctly. Cuba has specific restrictions; confirm with Hogani Jets.

United Kingdom

The UK has strict pet entry requirements. The animal must have an ISO microchip and a valid rabies vaccination administered after the chip was implanted. A tapeworm treatment from a vet within 24 to 120 hours of UK arrival is also required. A health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS is required for US-issued certificates.

The timing of the tapeworm treatment is not flexible: too early or too late and the certificate is invalid. Failure to meet UK requirements results in the animal being quarantined or returned to the origin country. These requirements apply to all arrivals in the UK regardless of aircraft type.

European Union

EU pet travel requires an ISO-standard microchip, a valid rabies vaccination administered after the microchip, and an EU-compliant health certificate. For a first rabies vaccination, the vaccine must be administered at least 21 days before EU entry. The health certificate must be endorsed by a USDA-accredited vet for US-originating travel.

Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand have the most restrictive pet import requirements in the world. Both countries are rabies-free and protect this status through mandatory quarantine for arriving animals.

Australia requires a minimum 10-day quarantine in a government facility upon arrival. New Zealand has similar requirements. These quarantine periods apply regardless of the aircraft type, the owner's status, or the documentation quality.

For Australia or New Zealand travel, contact the destination biosecurity authority at least 6 months before departure. The import approval process, pre-export isolation requirements, and quarantine booking must all be completed before departure.

International pet travel documentation fails when clients do not plan far enough ahead. The health certificate must be issued within 10 days of departure. Issued later than 10 days before travel, it is invalid. But the microchip must precede the rabies vaccine.

The rabies vaccine may need 21 days of validity before EU entry. The USDA APHIS endorsement takes 3 to 5 business days after the vet issues the certificate. The tapeworm treatment for the UK must be done within a precise window. These requirements do not overlap neatly.

Starting the process 5 days before UK departure will not produce the right documentation. For European destinations, start at least 3 to 4 weeks before departure. For Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii, start significantly earlier.

Private jets have no breed ban equivalent to commercial airline policies on brachycephalic breeds. French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, and Persian cats all travel in the passenger cabin. They are not subject to the respiratory risk that prompted commercial airline cargo bans on these breeds.

Some individual operators have their own restrictions on specific large breeds due to cabin management concerns. This is uncommon but does occur. Hogani Jets confirms breed-specific operator restrictions at booking for any large or listed breed.

Declare any pet at inquiry. Hogani Jets confirms the operator's pet policy, documentation requirements, and breed considerations before the charter is confirmed.
