Do You Tip on a Private Jet?

Tipping is customary but not required on private jets. The charter rate does not include crew gratuity. Standard guidance for pilots: $50 to $100 for a domestic flight, $100 to $200 for international or overnight. Both the Captain and First Officer are tipped separately. For a flight attendant on a long flight with full cabin service, $100 to $250 is appropriate. Tips are given in cash at the end of the flight, directly to each crew member. No service will be withheld if you do not tip, but it is standard practice among regular charter clients.

The charter rate paid to the operator does not include crew gratuity. The crew receives a salary from the operator. A tip is a personal acknowledgment of their service above and beyond that base compensation.

Crew RoleDomestic Short HopDomestic Long / OvernightInternational or Multi-Day
Captain$50 - $100$100 - $200$100 - $200
First Officer$50 - $100$100 - $200$100 - $200
Flight Attendant$50 - $100$100 - $200$100 - $250
FBO Concierge (exceptional)$20 - $50$20 - $50$20 - $50

These are guidelines, not rules. A short, under-90-minute domestic hop where the crew is professional but the interaction is minimal warrants the lower end. A 10-hour international flight with multiple meal periods and personalized service beyond the standard is worth the higher end.

Give tips in cash at the end of the flight, directly to each crew member individually. Do not hand a combined amount to one crew member to distribute. Each person receives their own envelope or notes separately.

Card payment is not practical for crew tipping and is not expected. Prepare the cash before boarding. This avoids searching for the right amount at the end of the flight.

If you forget, returning to the aircraft briefly to tip the crew is entirely appropriate.

For celebration flights, tip at the higher end or above the range. A crew that set up decorations and managed champagne service throughout the flight has done more than standard. The crew's involvement in making the event special is worth acknowledging.

An international trip of 8 or more hours warrants the higher end of the range. A flight attendant managing multiple meal courses and continuous service for a working team has earned it.

Exceptional service in a difficult situation is worth acknowledging specifically. A crew that managed a diversion or a challenging weather event with calm professionalism has gone well above standard. Tipping well in these circumstances is appropriate and remembered.

A short domestic sector under 90 minutes is fine at the lower end of the range. A professional but minimal service interaction does not warrant the higher figures. The crew has done their job competently. The tip acknowledges this without overstating a brief transaction.

Some corporate aircraft management arrangements have explicit no-tipping policies for their crews. This is uncommon but worth noting. If you are unsure whether a tipping policy applies, ask Hogani Jets at booking.

Regular clients who fly with the same crew over multiple trips sometimes consolidate tips at a natural break point. The end of a year or before a long travel break are common moments. This is an acknowledgment of the relationship rather than a per-flight transaction. There is no fixed convention for this approach. The amount reflects the accumulated service relationship and is entirely at the client's discretion. Some long-term clients give non-cash acknowledgments at key moments, such as a year-end gift alongside or instead of cash.

FBO ground staff can be tipped for exceptional service. This covers staff who handle bags, manage your vehicle, or assist with concierge requests. $20 to $50 is appropriate for a ground handler who goes beyond standard service. This includes tracking down a specific item or coordinating a complex arrival.

Standard FBO handling is covered by operator handling fees. This includes moving bags from vehicle to aircraft and staging the ramp. A tip for standard handling is a gesture, not an expectation. For exceptional or personalized assistance, it is a natural acknowledgment.

On US-operated aircraft flying internationally, US tipping conventions apply. The crew is typically US-based, and the same norms as domestic apply.

On European-operated or internationally-based charter aircraft, tipping norms differ. European aviation crews are generally paid at a higher salary structure than US crews. The expectation of a tip is lower than in the US context. A modest tip remains appreciated, but the convention is less established than in US operations.

For international charters where the crew is based outside the US, ask Hogani Jets about local convention at booking. This is the most reliable guidance.

Do you tip on a private jet?

Yes, tipping is customary on private jets but not required. No service will be withheld if you do not tip. It is the normal practice among frequent charter clients. The charter rate does not include crew gratuity.

How much should you tip a private jet pilot?

$50 to $100 per pilot for a domestic flight. $100 to $200 for international or overnight. $150 to $250 for multi-day sectors. Both the Captain and First Officer are tipped separately in cash at the end of the flight.

How much do you tip a flight attendant on a private jet?

$50 to $100 for a domestic short flight. $100 to $200 for a long domestic or overnight. $150 to $300 for international with multiple meal periods. The tip reflects both flight length and service level.

When do you give the tip on a private jet?

At the end of the flight, directly to each crew member individually. Prepare cash before boarding to avoid searching at the end. If you forget and are already at the vehicle, returning to tip is entirely appropriate.

Should you tip the same amount to the pilot and flight attendant?

Not necessarily. The pilot tip reflects professional responsibility and flight complexity. The flight attendant tip reflects service quality. On a long international flight, the flight attendant tip may match or exceed the pilot tip.

Is cash the only way to tip on a private jet?

Cash is the standard method. Card payment is not practical and is not expected. US dollars are appropriate for US-operated aircraft on any route. On international aircraft based outside the US, local currency or dollars are both accepted.

Do you tip on an empty leg flight?

Yes. Empty leg flights involve the same crew and the same service standards as any charter. The service level does not change because the ticket price was discounted. Tipping convention is identical to a standard charter.

What if the flight is short, under an hour?

A short flight still warrants a tip at the lower end of the range. $50 per pilot and $50 for the flight attendant on an under-90-minute sector is appropriate. A minimal acknowledgment is customary even on brief sectors.

Do some operators have no-tipping policies?

Some corporate aircraft management arrangements have explicit no-tipping policies. This is uncommon. If unsure whether a policy applies to your charter, ask Hogani Jets at booking. Where a policy exists, it will be confirmed at the time of booking.

Should I tip FBO ground staff?

$20 to $50 for exceptional FBO service. This covers concierges who tracked a specific item or coordinated a complex arrival. Standard bag handling is covered by operator fees. A tip for standard service is a gesture.
