Floating Fleet Vs Owner Approved Vs Fixed Base: What You're Actually Booking

Two jets of the same type don't always give you the same trip. A big part of that comes down to how the aircraft is run, and it's something I end up explaining to almost every client. There are three types I talk about most: floating fleet, owner approved, and fixed base. None of them is a guarantee either way.

A floating fleet aircraft is on a charter program full time. That usually means good availability and a competitive price, especially on repositioning legs. Where you notice it is the small stuff. A broken window shade or a worn seat buckle won't ground the plane, so it can stay that way until the aircraft gets back to its home base and someone actually looks at it.

Owner approved aircraft are usually kept in great shape, because the owner has a personal stake in the plane and is paying attention. The condition is rarely the problem. The owner's schedule is. If they want their plane back, your trip can be the one that gets bumped, sometimes with very little notice.

A fixed base operator can have a hard time competing on price for one-way trips, because they're not spreading their costs across a big managed fleet. Where they make up for it is support. They generally have their own hangar, so if something goes wrong it gets fixed quickly instead of waiting on someone else.

Plenty of operators don't fit the pattern, in both directions. So there's no single right answer. What matters is knowing which one you're booking and what you're trading off before you confirm the trip.

Type

Empty Legs And One-Way Quotes

Main Risk

Floating Fleet

Frequent. These planes reposition a lot, so they're usually the best place to find discounted one-ways.Small items that don't ground the plane can wait until it gets back to base.

Owner Approved

Hit or miss. It depends on the owner's own travel, not a set program.Your trip can get bumped or changed at short notice if the owner wants the plane.

Fixed Base Operator

Limited. Smaller regional fleets mean one-way pricing usually runs higher.Lower. They usually have their own hangar and maintenance team, so problems get fixed fast.

If you've got a quote and you're not sure which type of aircraft it is, ask your broker. They should be able to tell you before you confirm anything.
