A private jet charter to Utila runs $1,300 to $2,500 hourly by turboprop. Light jets cost $2,300 to $3,800 an hour. Aircraft land at Utila Airport (MHUT / UII), 1.6 km from town. Runway 07/25 measures 4,265 feet, so turboprops and light jets fit, but larger jets do not. Utila has no customs post. Arrivals clear first at Roatán (RTB) or La Ceiba (LCE), each about 20 minutes away by air. Hogani Jets coordinates every charter through licensed Part 135 operators or carriers approved by the applicable aviation authority.

Utila is the smallest of the three main Bay Islands of Honduras, home to about 5,200 people. It sits at the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, 36 km off the mainland at La Ceiba. A private jet to Utila means one customs stop, then a short hop across the water.

A Utila private jet charter turns a two-airport airline journey and a ferry into one planned trip. Scheduled service reaches Utila only through domestic connections or the boat from La Ceiba. A chartered turboprop or light jet clears customs on Roatán and lands on the island about 20 minutes later.

  • Dive gear handled: heavy equipment stays with the aircraft instead of crossing by ferry.
  • Two islands, one trip: Roatán and Utila are only 24 nautical miles apart.
  • Small-island access: the airstrip is a short ride from the harbour and dive shops.

Utila Airport (UII) is the closest airport to Utila, 1.6 km northeast of the town. Its asphalt runway, 07/25, measures 4,265 feet, with northeast approaches over the water. The field has no customs and no runway lighting. International flights therefore stop first at Roatán or La Ceiba.

Can a private jet land at Utila Airport?

Yes, light jets and turboprops can land at Utila Airport (UII), where runway 07/25 is 4,265 feet long. A Utila Airport private jet arrival suits aircraft such as the Phenom 300E or Pilatus PC-12 NGX. Midsize and larger jets land at Roatán (RTB), 24 nautical miles away, then connect by turboprop.

Private flights to Utila clear customs at Roatán or La Ceiba. Utila Airport is not an airport of entry. Most guests choose Roatán, where a private jet to Roatán lands on 6,857 feet of runway. The same turboprop or light jet then continues 24 nautical miles to Utila.

Is Roatán or La Ceiba the better customs stop for Utila?

Roatán (RTB) is the better customs stop for most Utila trips, just 24 nautical miles from Utila (UII). Light jets and turboprops clear customs there and continue in the same aircraft. La Ceiba (LCE), with a 9,678-foot runway, suits ultra-long-range jets and VIP airliners instead.

Matt's Recommendation

Utila is one of the few Bay Islands strips where a light jet makes sense. Clear in Roatán, keep the same aircraft, and the island is twenty minutes away.

A private flight to Utila from Florida takes about two and a half hours, including the customs stop. Nearly all private jet charter flights to Utila stop on Roatán for immigration. A private jet Miami to Roatán leg covers 667 nautical miles, about 1 hour 45 minutes by light jet. The hop to Utila adds roughly 20 minutes.

  • Miami: about 1 hour 45 minutes to Roatán by private light jet.
  • Houston and Atlanta: roughly 2.5 hours to Roatán in a private midsize jet.
  • New York: around 3 hours 40 minutes to Roatán by super midsize private jet.
  • Belize City: about 40 minutes to Roatán by private turboprop.

Flight hours and aircraft category set most of the cost. For a private jet to Utila, the main choice is whether one light aircraft can do the whole trip. Larger jets need a second, short turboprop leg from Roatán. Daylight-only operations can also add an overnight on Roatán.

  • One aircraft or two: light jets and turboprops avoid a separate connection.
  • Customs stop: landing and handling at Roatán or La Ceiba.
  • Daylight limits: late arrivals may need a night on Roatán.
  • Peak weeks: Semana Santa and the spring whale shark season.

What is the cheapest way to fly privately to Utila?

The cheapest way to reach Utila privately is a turboprop at $1,300 to $2,500 an hour. From Belize, San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa, one turboprop covers the whole trip with a customs stop. From Florida, a light jet via Roatán (RTB) usually prices lowest.

Many jets that drop guests on Roatán head back to the US mainland empty. Operators offer those legs for the whole aircraft at a lower price. Timing depends on the original trip, so they suit travellers with open dates.

Ask about empty legs from Roatán at charter@hoganijets.com or +1-855-660-0573.

March to May brings the calmest diving and the clearest water around Utila. Whale sharks appear all year, with sightings peaking in March and April. Hurricane season in the Atlantic lasts from June 1 to November 30. October to December is the wettest stretch on this coast.

When is diving visibility best around Utila?

Diving visibility around Utila is best in the March to May dry season, reaching 36 metres (120 feet). For the rest of the year, divers can expect 18 to 30 metres (60 to 100 feet) or better. Drier weather in that window also suits Utila Airport's daylight-only flying.

Most places to stay on Utila are in East Harbour, the island's main town. Almost all hotels sit within a kilometre of the ferry pier.

Restaurants and other tourist amenities are close by, and most of town is walkable. Travellers wanting a full-service resort can add nights on neighbouring Roatán.

Utila is best known for diving, with more than 80 dive sites around its reefs. The whole island and its cays became a protected Ramsar wetland in 2013. Its Caymanian and English roots still show in the local dialect, alongside Garifuna heritage.

  • Reef diving: wall dives, wrecks and the chance of a whale shark.
  • The Utila Cays: Water Cay, Pigeon Cay and Sandy Cay for beaches and snorkelling.
  • Pumpkin Hill: the island's highest point at 74 metres, a volcanic cone.
  • Mangrove wildlife: home of the critically endangered Utila spiny-tailed iguana.
  • Pirate history: local lore links the reefs to Captain Morgan's lost treasure.

  • Scuba diving: allow about a day between the last dive and the flight home.
  • Dive equipment: tanks and weights are heavy; share the gear list early.
  • Island hopping: Roatán and Guanaja add short turboprop legs.
  • Fishing trips: rods and coolers need checking against turboprop baggage space.

Utila is a small island, so transfers from the airstrip are short. Honduras uses the lempira and keeps Central Standard Time all year. Honduras carries a Level 3, reconsider travel, advisory from the State Department, dated August 25, 2026. Review it before booking.
