Can You Use Your Phone on a Private Jet?

Phones, tablets, and laptops can be used throughout most private jet charter flights, including during takeoff and landing. The phone rules passengers know from commercial aviation do not apply in the same way on private jets. Airplane mode and the no-calls rule are commercial airline policies and do not apply on private charter flights. Instead, the operator sets device policies within FAA guidelines, and most operators permit phone use throughout. Cellular voice calls lose signal above approximately 10,000 feet. Wi-Fi voice calls via WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom work on Wi-Fi equipped aircraft at cruise altitude, so you can make and receive voice calls freely using in-flight Wi-Fi.

The FAA does not ban phone calls on private aircraft. The historic concern about portable electronic devices interfering with aircraft avionics has been substantially re-evaluated. Modern aircraft avionics are hardened against the electromagnetic interference generated by consumer electronics.

For Part 135 on-demand charter, the FAA requires operators to have a device policy. They must communicate it to passengers. Most Part 135 operators permit device use throughout the flight, including during taxi, takeoff, and landing. Aircraft systems are designed to tolerate the electromagnetic environment of consumer electronics in use.

If a specific operator requires airplane mode for any phase of the flight, the crew will advise. This is the exception, not the rule on modern charter aircraft.

Flight PhaseTypical PolicyNotes
Ground / TaxiPermitted on most aircraftCalls and data work while on the ground via cellular
Takeoff roll and climbPermitted on most aircraftSome operators request airplane mode during the initial climb only
Cruise altitudeFully permittedCellular drops above approx. 10,000 feet; Wi-Fi available on equipped aircraft
Descent and approachPermitted on most aircraftCrew may request devices be secured (not off) for landing on some aircraft
Landing and taxi-inPermitted on most aircraftCellular service resumes as the aircraft approaches the ground

Cellular Voice Calls

Standard cellular voice calls work on the ground and during the initial climb to approximately 10,000 feet. Above this altitude, the aircraft is too far from ground-based cell towers for a stable cellular connection. The signal drops out.

On descent, cellular service resumes from approximately 10,000 feet as the aircraft comes within range of ground towers. For short flights under 30 minutes, cellular service may be available throughout if cruise altitude is low.

Wi-Fi Voice and Video Calls

Wi-Fi calling is the practical solution for voice and video calls at cruise altitude on a private jet. Apps including WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams all work on Wi-Fi equipped aircraft. Standard calls via Wi-Fi Calling also work where the mobile carrier supports it.

The quality depends on the aircraft's Wi-Fi system. Starlink Aviation and Gogo 2Ku support HD video calls reliably. Legacy Gogo ATG handles voice calls but may have quality variation. See the Wi-Fi on Private Jets page for system-specific speed details.

Commercial airlines prohibit voice calls in the cabin as a matter of policy, separate from FAA device rules. The prohibition exists because 200 passengers calling at once would be unacceptable in a shared cabin. Private jets carry 4 to 18 passengers in a private cabin. There is no shared-cabin social reason to prohibit voice calls.

Making phone calls on a private jet is completely normal. You can take calls, make calls, and run video meetings throughout a charter flight without restriction or social concern.

Texting and data apps (iMessage, WhatsApp, email, Slack, Teams messaging) work whenever the aircraft has cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. On the ground and below 10,000 feet, cellular data is available. At cruise altitude, Wi-Fi equipped aircraft provide continuous data connectivity.

On aircraft without Wi-Fi, data connectivity is unavailable between approximately 10,000 feet on climb and 10,000 feet on descent. For a 3-hour midsize jet flight, this represents roughly 2 hours without data if the aircraft has no Wi-Fi. Download anything needed for the flight before boarding.

Laptops and tablets can be used throughout most private jet flights without restriction. The commercial airline rule requiring laptops to be stowed for takeoff does not apply to Part 135 charter. Most private jet operators permit laptops on tray tables throughout the flight.

On descent and landing, securing loose items, including laptops, is standard good practice. A laptop sliding off an unsecured tray during a firm landing is a practical concern, not a regulatory one.

Bluetooth headphones, keyboards, earbuds, and speakers work throughout private jet flights. Bluetooth operates at very low power levels and does not cause avionics interference. No private jet operator policy restricts Bluetooth device use.

Phones, laptops, tablets, and Bluetooth devices are permitted throughout virtually all private jet charter flights.

Cellular voice calls drop above 10,000 feet and resume on descent. Wi-Fi calling works at altitude on equipped aircraft. Video calls via Zoom,

FaceTime, and Teams work on Starlink and 2Ku equipped aircraft at full HD quality. There are no shared-cabin restrictions on voice calls.

The main practical constraint is Wi-Fi availability on the specific aircraft. Confirm this at booking if connectivity is essential for the flight.

Satellite phones (Iridium, Inmarsat) work at any altitude globally because they connect to satellites rather than ground towers. Some charter clients carry satellite phones as backup for remote or international destinations where connectivity may be limited.

Most Part 135 operators permit the use of satellite phones in the cabin. If you plan to use a satellite phone on a charter flight, inform the crew at boarding. It is not a concern, but advising the crew is standard professional courtesy.

Can you use your phone on a private jet?

Yes. Phones can be used throughout most private jet flights. Cellular calls lose signal above 10,000 feet. Wi-Fi calling works on equipped aircraft. No airline ban on calls applies on private jets.

Do you have to put your phone in airplane mode on a private jet?

On most private jets, no. Airplane mode is a commercial airline requirement, not a Part 135 rule. Most operators permit device use throughout the flight. The crew will advise if any phase requires it.

Can you make phone calls on a private jet?

Yes. Voice calls work via cellular below 10,000 feet and resume on descent. At cruise altitude, Wi-Fi calling via WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom works on equipped aircraft. There is no policy ban on voice calls aboard private jets.

Why can you make calls on a private jet but not a commercial airline?

Commercial airlines ban calls as a cabin policy. Simultaneous calls from 200 passengers would be unacceptable in a shared cabin. A private jet carries 4 to 18 passengers in a private cabin. There is no shared-cabin reason to prohibit calls.

Does cellular data work on a private jet?

Below 10,000 feet during climb and descent, yes. At cruise altitude, cellular data is unavailable without Wi-Fi. On equipped aircraft, data apps including email, WhatsApp, and Slack work at altitude. On aircraft without Wi-Fi, download what you need before boarding.

Can you use a laptop on a private jet during takeoff?

On most private jet charter flights, yes. The commercial rule requiring laptops stowed for takeoff does not apply to Part 135 charter. Most operators permit laptops throughout. Securing loose items for landing is good practice.

Do Bluetooth headphones work on a private jet?

Yes. Bluetooth operates at very low power and does not interfere with avionics. Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, keyboards, and speakers work throughout private jet flights without restriction. No Part 135 operator policy restricts Bluetooth device use.

Can you make video calls from a private jet?

Yes on Wi-Fi equipped aircraft. Starlink Aviation and Gogo 2Ku at 70 to 350 Mbps support HD video calls via Zoom, FaceTime, and Teams. Legacy Gogo ATG handles video but may have quality variation under load.
