The names sound almost identical, and that causes real confusion. This page covers the original Avanti, built from 1990 to 2005. It used PT6A-66 engines and a three-screen Collins EFIS cockpit.

Most aircraft use a main wing and a tail. The Avanti adds a third lifting surface, a small forward canard. It shares the load with the main wing and tailplane.

Spreading lift across three surfaces let Piaggio use smaller wings than a conventional design would need. Mounting the engines behind the cabin, driving pusher propellers, keeps the propeller noise and vibration away from passengers.

Piaggio began developing the Avanti in 1979, aiming at wealthy Fortune 500 companies. The first prototype flew in 1986, and Italian certification followed in March 1990.

Financial problems stalled the program. A group of investors, led by Ferrari vice-president Piero Ferrari, helped relaunch it in 1998. About 100 aircraft were delivered by 2005, when the Avanti II took over.
