Flying Private to Aspen, Colorado

Most private jet destinations require you to choose the right aircraft and pick an FBO. Aspen requires something more: a broker who understands the airport.

ASE sits in the Roaring Fork Valley, surrounded on three sides by rapidly rising terrain. The approach path is a controlled descent through mountain terrain, and the departure path follows a precise heading before the aircraft can maneuver toward its route. The FAA maintains specialized crew qualification and aircraft certification requirements specific to ASE operations; not every crew is authorized to operate there.

On top of the terrain complexity, the airport imposes noise abatement restrictions enforced by county ordinance, limits aircraft size, and runs a curfew that ends the operating day at 11:00 PM. When mountain weather rolls in during peak ski season, the mountain valley position that makes ASE so convenient becomes its primary liability.

ASE, Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (Primary)

ASE is the obvious choice for most Aspen-bound private travelers: three miles from downtown, ten minutes from Aspen Mountain's base, and a short transfer to any property in the valley.

The tradeoffs are real. Aircraft are restricted to wingspans under 95 feet and maximum takeoff weights under 100,000 pounds; this rules out most large cabin jets and all ultra-long-range aircraft. 

The curfew runs hard: no arrivals after 11:00 PM MST, no departures after 10:30 PM MST. Stage III aircraft are required for any operations after 30 minutes past sunset.

ASE recorded a flight completion rate of 94.4% in 2025. Roughly one in eighteen scheduled operations was disrupted. In a typical peak ski season week, that is not an abstract statistic.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), also known as Sardy Field, is located 3 miles northwest of downtown Aspen at an elevation of 7,820 feet above sea level. The airport operates under a strict noise curfew; no aircraft arrivals are permitted after 11:00 PM MST, and no departures are permitted after 10:30 PM MST, with exceptions limited to emergency operations. Aircraft are restricted to wingspans under 95 feet and maximum takeoff weights under 100,000 pounds, excluding most large heavy jets and ultra-long-range aircraft. The single 8,006-foot runway recorded a flight completion rate of 94.4% in 2025.

EGE, Eagle County Regional Airport (Primary Alternative)

Eagle County Regional Airport sits approximately 68 miles and a 90-minute drive from Aspen, and it is the most operationally reliable gateway to the Aspen valley.

EGE's 9,000-foot runway and lower elevation of 6,548 feet give it meaningfully better performance margins for most aircraft types. 

No curfew applies, and EGE handles a wider range of aircraft sizes than ASE. The main consideration is the ground transfer, pre-arrange transportation, especially during peak ski season.

RIL, Rifle Garfield County Airport (Diversion and Contingency)

Rifle Garfield County Airport is the primary diversion airport when weather closes ASE. Located 61 miles from Aspen at 5,548 feet elevation, RIL operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The critical planning point: ground transportation must be pre-arranged before you depart. On a major weather diversion day, more than 100 private jets have landed at Rifle. Approximately 77 percent of Rifle Airport's revenue is weather-related, a precise measure of how frequently the diversion scenario plays out across a full ski season.

When weather prevents landings at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), private aviation traffic diverts primarily to Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) and Rifle Garfield County Airport (RIL). EGE is approximately 68 miles from Aspen with a 9,000-foot runway and no curfew. RIL is approximately 61 miles from Aspen, operates 24 hours a day with no curfew, and handles the majority of ASE weather diversions. During major diversion events, more than 100 private jets have landed at Rifle simultaneously; ground transportation must be pre-arranged before departure.

The 95-foot wingspan limit and 100,000-pound weight limit at ASE are enforced operational restrictions, not guidelines.

Aircraft that operate regularly at ASE:

• Very Light Jets and Light Jets, full ASE compatibility

• Midsize Jets (Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP, Challenger 300) compatible

• Super Midsize Jets (Challenger 350, Praetor 600, Citation Longitude) verify per aircraft

Aircraft typically unable to operate at ASE:

• Larger heavy jets and ultra-long-range aircraft with wingspans exceeding 95 feet

• Aircraft exceeding 100,000 pounds maximum takeoff weight

Note:  If you have a preferred aircraft and want to bring it to Aspen, your broker should verify ASE compatibility before confirming the booking. For oversized aircraft, EGE becomes the primary airport of entry.

The official curfew rules, as published by Aspen/Pitkin County Airport:

• All aircraft: No operations permitted between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM MST
• Stage III aircraft only: Permitted from 30 minutes after sunset until 11:00 PM MST
• No departures permitted after 10:30 PM MST
• Exemptions granted only for emergency operations (medevac, SAR, firefighting)

For arrivals: A delayed East Coast flight that updates to an 11:05 PM arrival cannot land at ASE and will be diverted, requiring ground transportation that was not in your original plan.

For departures: If you arrive at the FBO at 10:45 PM, you cannot depart. An experienced broker builds curfew margin into your schedule, typically targeting arrivals no later than 10:00 PM.

The night curfew at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport ends the operational day at 11:00 PM MST for arrivals and 10:30 PM MST for departures. Stage III aircraft are the only aircraft permitted to operate from 30 minutes after sunset to the 11:00 PM cutoff. A delayed inbound flight that arrives after 11:00 PM cannot land at ASE and will be diverted, requiring ground transportation to Aspen from the alternate airport. Building adequate curfew margin, typically targeting arrivals no later than 10:00 PM, is standard practice for experienced brokers.

A responsible broker prepares for diversions before your feet leave the ground. Here is what happens:

• The crew and ATC determine that ASE weather is below minimums for the approach
• The aircraft diverts to the filed alternate, typically EGE or RIL
• Passengers land at the alternate, not at ASE
• Ground transportation from the alternate to Aspen is required

If ground transportation is pre-arranged at both EGE and RIL, a diversion becomes a 90-minute inconvenience. Without it, on a heavy weather day, it can become a multi-hour problem.

Before any Aspen charter, ask your broker: "What is the filed alternate? Is ground transportation from the alternate pre-arranged?"

Indicative block times in typical conditions. Mountain weather, routing, and aircraft performance can affect actual flight times.

The most reliable aircraft categories for Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) are light jets, midsize jets, and super midsize jets within ASE's 95-foot wingspan and 100,000-pound weight restrictions. Popular Aspen-compatible aircraft include the Citation XLS+, Challenger 300, and Embraer Praetor 600. Clients who require a large heavy jet or ultra-long-range cabin space should plan to arrive at Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) instead, approximately 68 miles from Aspen with a 90-minute ground transfer.

Winter (December–March): Peak demand concentrated around Christmas and New Year, Presidents' Week, and spring break. Aircraft availability at ASE tightens significantly. Booking two to four weeks in advance during peak holiday periods is strongly recommended.

Summer (June–September): Meaningful demand but more manageable than winter peaks. Aircraft availability is generally more flexible.

Shoulder seasons (April–May, October–November): The best combination of availability and pricing for travelers with flexibility.

From ASE, ski resort drive times:

• Buttermilk Ski Area: approximately 5 minutes
• Aspen Highlands: approximately 7 minutes
• Aspen Mountain (Ajax): approximately 10 minutes
• Snowmass Ski Area: approximately 10 minutes

For travelers arriving at EGE or RIL, pre-arranged luxury ground transportation is essential. Peak season vehicle availability at both alternate airports can be limited, and Highway 82 requires drivers familiar with winter mountain conditions.
