Private jet charter to Tortola, BVI, arriving at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island for direct access to Road Town and BVI sailing charters.

Private Jet Charter to Tortola / Beef Island, BVI

Private jet charter to Tortola starts at $5,500+ one way, with aircraft landing directly at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS / TUPJ) on Beef Island, connected to Tortola by the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. EIS has a 4,645 ft (1,416 m) runway (07/25), but displaced thresholds reduce the usable landing distance to about 3,957 ft, so this is a genuine short-field airport: turboprops and light jets are the standard, with selected midsize jets only under strict payload management. Tortola is the capital and main gateway of the British Virgin Islands and the heart of the Caribbean's premier sailing grounds. Hogani Jets coordinates each charter through licensed Part 135 operators. Note the BVI is a foreign territory: a passport is required for all travelers, including U.S. citizens.

Tortola is the capital and largest of the British Virgin Islands, and the territory's main gateway. It is best known as the heart of the Caribbean's premier sailing and yacht-charter grounds, the bareboat-charter capital of the world, with Road Town's marinas serving as the launch point for the BVI's legendary cruising waters. For private travelers, Tortola offers the rare advantage of a direct fixed-wing arrival into the BVI, rather than the boat transfer that islands like St. John require, though its short runway means careful aircraft selection.

The Gateway to the British Virgin Islands

Terrance B. Lettsome International on Beef Island is the BVI's principal airport and the only one taking direct private jet arrivals into the territory. From here the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge connects straight onto Tortola, and Road Town's marinas and the wider BVI, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, are within easy reach by road, ferry, or yacht.

The World's Sailing and Yacht-Charter Capital

Tortola is synonymous with sailing. The BVI's steady trade winds, line-of-sight navigation, and dozens of protected anchorages make it the world's leading bareboat and crewed yacht-charter destination. Many private clients fly into Tortola specifically to begin a sailing charter, and Hogani Jets coordinates the arrival to connect smoothly with the marina.

Direct BVI Arrival, with Short-Runway Planning

Unlike transfer-only islands, Tortola lets you land inside the BVI itself. The trade-off is the runway: EIS is genuinely short, so the aircraft must be chosen for it. Turboprops and light jets are the standard; larger aircraft route via St. Thomas or San Juan with an onward transfer. Getting this right is the core of planning a Tortola charter.

Tortola is served by Terrance B. Lettsome International on Beef Island, the BVI's main airport, with St. Thomas and San Juan as larger-aircraft alternates when the runway rules out a direct jet.

EIS is the only direct fixed-wing gateway into the BVI, but it is a genuinely short field. The headline runway is 4,645 ft, yet displaced thresholds reduce the usable landing distance to roughly 3,957 ft, and the pavement is light (PCN 16). That keeps operations to turboprops and light jets, with selected midsize jets only under payload management. Larger aircraft use St. Thomas or San Juan and transfer in.

Beef Island is served by two FBOs, Airport Services (BVI) and Platinum BVI Services, with BVI customs and immigration on site during daytime hours. Hogani Jets coordinates fuel, handling, and the marina or ferry connection ahead of each flight.

Yes, with the right aircraft. Turboprops and light jets land directly at EIS from the regional Caribbean and, with planning, from South Florida. The British Virgin Islands is a foreign territory, so a valid passport is required for all travelers, including U.S. citizens, and arrivals clear BVI customs and immigration at EIS. The airport is towered during daytime hours with visual approaches only.

Direct Routes Into Tortola (EIS)

  • St. Thomas: approximately 15 to 20 minutes by turboprop or light jet, the quickest hop, though it crosses an international border into the BVI.
  • San Juan: approximately 45 to 60 minutes by turboprop or light jet, a common regional gateway leg.
  • Antigua and regional Caribbean: approximately 1 hour by turboprop or light jet.
  • Miami and Fort Lauderdale: approximately 3 to 3.5 hours by light jet, subject to the short-runway payload limits at EIS.

Aircraft suitability is the decisive factor at Tortola. The short declared landing distance favours turboprops and light jets; a light jet such as a CJ3 or Phenom 300 is the practical jet choice from Florida. Larger groups or longer nonstop ranges that need a midsize-plus aircraft are usually better served by flying into St. Thomas or San Juan and transferring in.

Terrance B. Lettsome has a 4,645 ft (1,416 m) asphalt runway (07/25), but the operationally important figure is the declared landing distance of about 3,957 ft after displaced thresholds, well under 5,000 ft. Combined with light PCN 16 pavement and visual-only approaches, this makes EIS a genuine short-field airport. Turboprops and light jets are the standard; selected midsize jets are conditional on strict payload management; super midsize and heavy jets are not feasible.

Aircraft Feasibility at EIS

Midsize Jet8–9 Conditional, payload-managedCitation XLS+, Hawker 800XP. Only with reduced fuel and payload on the short declared distance. Not routine; operator-confirmed.
Super Midsize / Heavy8-19Not feasibleRunway and pavement insufficient. Use St. Thomas or San Juan and transfer in.

Tortola is a short-field airport once the displaced thresholds and light pavement are accounted for. Turboprops and light jets are the realistic options. A midsize jet is possible only with payload management and operator confirmation, never assumed. Larger aircraft route via St. Thomas or San Juan. Passenger figures shown are maximum capacity; typical configurations carry fewer.

Flight Logistics and Arrival Planning

Tortola is an international BVI arrival with customs at EIS and a short-runway profile that drives aircraft choice. Pre-departure documentation, the passport requirement, and onward marina or island transfers are coordinated ahead of each flight through the Part 135 operators Hogani Jets works with.

  • A valid passport is mandatory for all travelers, including U.S. citizens; the BVI is a foreign territory with its own customs and immigration at EIS.
  • Aircraft are matched to the short declared landing distance; a turboprop or light jet is the standard, confirmed against payload before booking.
  • Beef Island connects directly to Tortola by the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, so there is no marine transfer to reach Tortola itself; Road Town and the marinas are a short drive.
  • The airport is towered daytime with visual approaches only; a wind-shear caution applies on the Runway 07 approach in southerly winds, planned by the crew.

Aircraft selection for Tortola is governed by the short declared landing distance. Cruise speed is included below as a reference, though runway compatibility is the priority here. Turboprops and light jets are the standard; midsize is conditional only.

CategoryExample AircraftPassengersCruise SpeedRunway FitRecommended Use

Midsize JetCitation XLS+, Hawker 800XP8–9 ~506 to 514 mphConditionalPayload-managed only; operator-confirmed

Common aircraft and cruise speeds: the King Air 350 (turboprop, up to 9 passengers, ~357 mph / 310 ktas) is an excellent short-field performer and a reliable choice for EIS. The Pilatus PC-12 (single-engine turboprop, up to 9 passengers, ~311 mph / 270 ktas) is outstanding on short runways and regional sectors. The Citation CJ3 (light jet, up to 6 passengers, ~480 mph / 417 ktas) is the practical jet choice into Tortola from Florida and the region. The Phenom 300 (light jet, up to 9 passengers, ~521 mph / 453 ktas) is the fastest light jet in its class with good short-field performance. The Citation XLS+ (midsize jet, up to 9 passengers, ~506 mph / 440 ktas) is feasible into EIS only under strict payload management and never assumed without operator sign-off; for many trips, St. Thomas plus a transfer is the better plan.
Payload planning matters at Tortola. On a short declared landing distance, fuel and baggage loads affect what can operate. Sailing-charter clients arriving with gear should plan around a turboprop or light jet and confirm payload at booking; for larger groups, an arrival via St. Thomas with a ferry or boat transfer to the marina is often the smoother option.

Tortola charter traffic is led by the regional Caribbean gateways, with light-jet routes from South Florida. All direct routes land at EIS; larger aircraft route via St. Thomas or San Juan.

Hourly Charter Rates by Aircraft Category

One-way charter prices include flight time plus repositioning, fuel, crew, taxes, and handling. The hourly rates below show the underlying cost per flight hour for each aircraft category.

Aircraft CategoryHourly RateExample Aircraft
Turboprop$1,100 – $2,300/hrKing Air 350, Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan
Very Light Jet$1,600 - $2,800/hrCitation Mustang, Phenom 100
Light Jet$2,300 - $3,800/hrCitation CJ3, Phenom 300
Midsize Jet (conditional)$2,800 - $5,500/hrCitation XLS+, Hawker 800XP

Pricing Factors Specific to Tortola

  • The short declared landing distance limits the aircraft pool to turboprops and light jets, with midsize only payload-managed, which narrows the category mix.
  • BVI international handling and customs fees apply on arrival and departure, typically adding to the total trip cost versus a domestic U.S. leg.
  • For larger groups, routing via St. Thomas or San Juan plus a transfer can be more cost-effective than forcing a payload-restricted jet into EIS.
  • Peak BVI sailing and winter season tightens availability of the suitable short-field aircraft; book earlier in these windows.

Tortola operates year-round, with the BVI sailing season and weather shaping demand.

  • Peak season (December through April): Best weather and prime sailing conditions, the busiest charter window. Book 3 to 5 weeks ahead, more for the holidays.
  • Sailing and regatta season: The BVI Spring Regatta and the winter charter season drive strong demand; confirm dates and book early around events.
  • Shoulder season (May and November): Favorable conditions with pricing below peak and better availability.
  • Hurricane season (June through October): Caribbean weather risk, particularly August and September. The short, visual-only runway and wind-shear caution mean weather can affect operations, so flexibility matters.

This guide is written for travelers arriving by private jet. The focus is on the arrival sequence, where to stay, and the sailing-and-beach character that defines Tortola and the BVI.

Where to Stay on Tortola

Tortola's accommodation is characterful and low-key rather than large-resort, with beach resorts, boutique hotels, and villas, plus, of course, a yacht for many sailing guests. The three below are leading land-based choices for charter clients.

Hotel / ResortSettingCategoryNotes
Long Bay Beach ResortLong Bay, northwest TortolaBeach ResortA long-established resort on a mile-long beach on Tortola's northwest coast, with rooms and villas. One of the island's best-known beach properties.

Tortola is a sailing-and-beach destination with characterful, low-key accommodation rather than large resorts. Long Bay Beach Resort and Sebastian on the Beach are well-known beach options, and Surfsong on Beef Island is a private villa resort right by the airport. Many sailing guests stay aboard their yacht; Hogani Jets coordinates the arrival to connect with the marina or hotel.

Places to Visit on Tortola and the BVI

The following spots are the most requested by visitors.

  • Road Town and the marinas: Tortola's capital and the launch point for BVI yacht charters, with shops, restaurants, and the main charter bases.
  • Cane Garden Bay: A beautiful sheltered bay on the north coast, one of Tortola's most famous beaches, with beach bars and calm water.
  • The Baths, Virgin Gorda: A short sail or ferry away, the BVI's signature attraction, giant granite boulders forming grottoes and pools.
  • Jost Van Dyke: The home of the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar and White Bay, a classic BVI day sail.
  • Sage Mountain National Park: Tortola's high point, with rainforest trails and sweeping views over the island chain.

Activities That Affect Flight Planning

  • Scuba diving: FAA recommends a 24-hour interval between diving and flying. Schedule dive days at least 24 hours before departure.
  • Sailing and yacht charters: Multi-day charters should be planned around the departure flight with a buffer day; allow time to return to Beef Island.
  • Beach and island-hopping days: No flight planning impact for same-day trips.

Practical Considerations

The British Virgin Islands uses the U.S. dollar, so no currency exchange is required, but it is a foreign territory: a passport is mandatory for all travelers, including U.S. citizens, and there is BVI customs and immigration. Driving is on the left. Cell coverage is reliable in populated areas. Medical facilities handle routine cases, with serious events transferred to St. Thomas, San Juan, or the U.S. mainland, worth noting given the BVI's island geography.

Matt's Recommendation

Tortola is the gateway to the best sailing on earth, so a lot of my clients are flying in to step straight onto a yacht. The thing I am always clear about is the runway: Beef Island looks like it has 4,600 feet, but once you account for the displaced thresholds you are really working with under 4,000, and the pavement is light, so it is a turboprop or a light jet, a King Air or a CJ3. If someone wants to bring a bigger group on a midsize or larger, I will usually fly them into St. Thomas and put them on a fast boat or a helicopter across, it is smoother than squeezing a jet that does not belong on that runway. And remember the BVI is a foreign country: everyone needs a passport, even my U.S. clients.

Can private jets land directly in Tortola?

Yes, with the right aircraft. Private jets land at Terrance B. Lettsome International (EIS / TUPJ) on Beef Island, bridge-connected to Tortola. The runway is 4,645 ft but the usable landing distance is about 3,957 ft after displaced thresholds, so turboprops and light jets are standard, with selected midsize jets only under payload management. Larger aircraft route via St. Thomas or San Juan.

How much does a private jet charter to Tortola cost?

Charter to Tortola starts at $5,500+ for a turboprop from St. Thomas, $8,000+ from San Juan, and around $15,000+ for a light jet from South Florida. BVI handling and customs fees apply. Final pricing depends on aircraft, date, and availability.

How long is the flight from Miami to Tortola?

A light jet from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to Tortola takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, subject to payload limits on the short runway. From St. Thomas it is a 15 to 20 minute hop, and from San Juan about 45 to 60 minutes.

What is the runway length at Tortola's airport?

Terrance B. Lettsome (EIS) has a 4,645 ft (1,416 m) runway (07/25), but displaced thresholds reduce the usable landing distance to about 3,957 ft, and the pavement is light (PCN 16). It is a genuine short field with visual approaches only, suited to turboprops and light jets.

Do I need a passport to fly private to Tortola?

Yes. U.S. travelers and other international visitors need a valid passport to enter Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. On arrival at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS), passengers complete BVI customs and immigration formalities.

Can heavy jets fly into Tortola?

No. The short declared landing distance and light pavement at EIS rule out super midsize and heavy jets. Turboprops and light jets are standard, with selected midsize jets only payload-managed. Larger aircraft fly into St. Thomas or San Juan, then transfer to Tortola by ferry, boat, or helicopter.

Which aircraft are best for Tortola?

Turboprops such as the King Air 350 (cruise approximately 357 mph) and Pilatus PC-12 for the short field and regional legs, and light jets such as the Citation CJ3 (approximately 480 mph) and Phenom 300 (approximately 521 mph) as the practical jet choice from Florida and the region.

Can I start a sailing charter from Tortola?

Yes. Tortola is the world's leading bareboat and crewed yacht-charter base, with Road Town's marinas the launch point for the BVI cruising grounds. Hogani Jets coordinates the arrival at EIS to connect smoothly with your charter base or marina.

Should I fly into Tortola or St. Thomas for the BVI?

For turboprop and light-jet trips, a direct arrival into Tortola (EIS) is most convenient and lands you inside the BVI. For larger groups needing a midsize-plus aircraft, flying into St. Thomas and transferring across by boat or helicopter is often smoother, though it adds a border crossing. Hogani Jets advises on the best option per trip.

Is Hogani Jets a direct air carrier?

No. Hogani Jets is an air charter broker and does not own or operate aircraft. All charters are facilitated through licensed Part 135 direct air carriers who maintain full operational control and regulatory compliance for every flight.
