Private Jet Charter to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
Virgin Gorda is one of the most exclusive islands in the British Virgin Islands, home to The Baths and a cluster of the Caribbean's finest luxury resorts. Its own airport (VIJ / TUPW) has just a 3,100 ft (945 m) unpaved sand-and-gravel runway (03/21) with strict regulatory access, so it serves small STOL turboprops only, not jets. There are two practical ways in: a short turboprop hop directly into Virgin Gorda from a regional gateway, or, for most jet clients, a flight into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan followed by a sea or helicopter transfer. Charters start at $5,500+ one way. Hogani Jets coordinates the aircraft and the island transfer as one arrangement. Note the BVI is a foreign territory: a passport is required for all travelers, including U.S. citizens.
Virgin Gorda is among the most exclusive islands in the Caribbean, the third-largest of the British Virgin Islands and home to The Baths, the territory's iconic landscape of giant granite boulders, sea pools, and grottoes. It is a magnet for luxury travelers, with Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the Oil Nut Bay estate community, and the North Sound yachting scene drawing a discerning, privacy-focused clientele. Reaching it privately means understanding the island's very particular aviation profile: a tiny, unpaved airstrip that takes only small turboprops, so most luxury arrivals come via a nearby gateway and a short sea or air transfer.
The Baths and a World-Class Luxury Bench
Virgin Gorda pairs a genuinely iconic natural attraction, The Baths, with one of the strongest luxury accommodation line-ups in the BVI. From Rosewood Little Dix Bay to the ultra-private Oil Nut Bay and the North Sound resorts, this is a destination with real high-end depth and consistent luxury search demand, which is exactly why getting the arrival right matters.
A Very Particular Airport
Virgin Gorda's own airport is one of the most restrictive in the Caribbean: a 3,100 ft unpaved sand-and-gravel strip, rebuilt in 2010 and limited by regulators to a small, specifically approved group of small-aircraft operators. In practice this means turboprops and STOL aircraft only; jets do not operate here. For most private clients the smoother route is a jet into a nearby gateway and a transfer across.
North Sound and Whole-Island Privacy
Virgin Gorda's North Sound is one of the Caribbean's great yachting enclaves, and the island sits beside some of the most exclusive private-island retreats anywhere. For travelers who want true seclusion, the area offers a level of privacy that few destinations can match, reached by sea once the flight is on the ground.
Virgin Gorda has its own small airport (VIJ), but it takes only small turboprops. Most jet clients arrive via Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan and transfer across by sea or air.
Airport | ICAO / IATA | Runway | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Virgin Gorda (DIRECT, turboprop only) | TUPW / VIJ | 3,100 ft (945 m)Rwy 03/21, Sand & Gravel (unpaved) | The island's own airport at Spanish Town. A short, unpaved strip rebuilt in 2010 and restricted by regulators to a small group of approved small-aircraft operators. Turboprops and STOL aircraft only; jets do not operate here. BVI customs. |
Tortola / Beef Island (JET GATEWAY) | TUPJ / EIS | 4,645 ft (3,957 ft LDA) | The nearest jet gateway, about 10 minutes by air or a short sea transfer. Turboprops and light jets; see the Tortola page. Then ferry or boat to Virgin Gorda. |
St. Thomas / San Juan (LARGER JETS) | TIST / TJSJ | 7,002 ft / 10,400 ft | For midsize and larger jets. Land at St. Thomas or San Juan, then transfer to Virgin Gorda by ferry, private boat, or helicopter. |
Virgin Gorda's own airport (VIJ) is an unpaved 3,100 ft strip restricted to a small set of approved turboprop operators, so jets cannot use it. A small turboprop can land directly; everyone else flies into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan and transfers across by sea or helicopter. Matching the arrival plan to the aircraft and the group is the core of a Virgin Gorda charter.
Virgin Gorda Airport is a small Out Island field with basic, operator-arranged handling and BVI customs; there is no full FBO. Most jet clients are handled at the gateway, Tortola (Airport Services / Platinum BVI), St. Thomas (three FBOs), or San Juan, then transferred across. Hogani Jets coordinates handling, customs, and the sea or helicopter transfer ahead of each flight.
Airport | Handling | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Virgin Gorda (VIJ) | Basic, operator-arranged | BVI customs on site. No full FBO; only approved STOL turboprop operators. Spanish Town and Rosewood Little Dix Bay are a short drive. |
Gateway (EIS / TIST / TJSJ) | Full FBO handling | Jet clients clear customs and are handled at the gateway, then continue to Virgin Gorda by sea or helicopter, often direct to a North Sound dock. |
Only by small turboprop. Virgin Gorda's airport takes STOL turboprops from regional gateways such as San Juan, St. Thomas, and Tortola, operated by the small group of carriers approved for the unpaved strip. Jets cannot land at VIJ. For jet clients, the practical answer is to fly into a nearby gateway and transfer across. The BVI is a foreign territory, so a passport is required for all travelers, including U.S. citizens.
Two Ways to Reach Virgin Gorda
- Direct by small turboprop into VIJ: a short hop from San Juan (about 45 to 60 minutes), St. Thomas (15 to 20 minutes), or Tortola (about 10 minutes), on an approved STOL turboprop. The most direct option, subject to the airport's operator and payload limits.
- By jet into a gateway, then transfer: fly a light, midsize, or larger jet into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan, then continue to Virgin Gorda by private boat, ferry, or helicopter. The usual route for most luxury and larger-group travel.
Long mainland U.S. nonstop flights into VIJ are not practical: the unpaved short runway rules out jets entirely. From the U.S., clients fly a jet into St. Thomas or San Juan and transfer across, or connect to a small turboprop for the final hop where suitable. Hogani Jets plans the combination that fits the group and the aircraft.
Virgin Gorda Airport has a 3,100 ft (945 m) unpaved sand-and-gravel runway (03/21), one of the most restrictive in the Caribbean. It is not simply short: the unpaved surface and a regulatory limit to specifically approved operators mean only small STOL turboprops operate here. Jets of any category do not. This shapes every Virgin Gorda itinerary.
Aircraft Feasibility at Virgin Gorda (VIJ)
Aircraft Category | Passengers | Feasibility | Operational Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
STOL Turboprop | 4–10 | Feasible, approved operators | King Air, Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan, Twin Otter class. The only aircraft that operate here, and only with operator approval for the unpaved strip. |
Very Light Jet | 4–6 | Not feasible | The unpaved 3,100 ft strip is unsuitable for jets. Use a gateway and transfer. |
Light Jet | 6–9 | Not feasible | Not operated into VIJ. Fly into Tortola or St. Thomas and transfer. |
Midsize / Larger Jets | 8-19 | Not feasible | Use St. Thomas or San Juan, then sea or helicopter transfer. |
Unlike most of our short-field destinations, Virgin Gorda's own airport is not a jet airport at all. The unpaved surface, 3,100 ft length, and regulatory operator restrictions mean only small STOL turboprops land here. For anything larger, the trip is a jet into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan plus a sea or helicopter transfer. Passenger figures shown are maximum capacity; typical configurations carry fewer.
Flight and Transfer Logistics
A Virgin Gorda trip is planned around the aircraft and the transfer together. Pre-departure documentation, the BVI passport requirement, and the onward sea or air connection are coordinated ahead of each flight through the Part 135 operators Hogani Jets works with.
- A valid passport is mandatory for all travelers, including U.S. citizens; the BVI is a foreign territory with its own customs and immigration.
- Direct VIJ arrivals are limited to approved STOL turboprop operators; aircraft and payload are confirmed against the unpaved strip before booking.
- Jet clients clear customs at the gateway (Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan), then continue to Virgin Gorda by private boat, ferry, or helicopter, timed to the arrival.
- North Sound and resort arrivals are often by sea directly to a marina or resort dock, which Hogani Jets coordinates with the flight.
Aircraft selection depends on the route chosen. For a direct VIJ arrival, only approved STOL turboprops apply. For the gateway-and-transfer route, the jet is chosen for the flight into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan. Cruise speeds below are a planning reference.
Category | Example Aircraft | Passengers | Cruise Speed | Where It Lands | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
STOL Turboprop | King Air 350, Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan | 4–10 | ~201-357 mph | Direct to VIJ | The only category that lands on Virgin Gorda |
Light Jet | Citation CJ3, Phenom 300 | 6–9 | ~480-521 mph | Gateway + transfer | Jet into Tortola or St. Thomas, then sea or heli |
Midsize Jet | Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP | 8–9 | ~506-514 mph | Gateway + transfer | Into St. Thomas or San Juan, then transfer |
Super Midsize | Challenger 300, Challenger 350 | 8–10 | ~541 mph | Gateway + transfer | Larger groups via St. Thomas or San Juan |
Common Aircraft and Cruise Speeds
Common aircraft and cruise speeds: the King Air 350 (turboprop, ~357 mph / 310 ktas) is a STOL-capable type approved for short, unpaved island strips. The Pilatus PC-12 (single-engine turboprop, up to 9 passengers, ~311 mph / 270 ktas) has outstanding short and unpaved field performance. The Cessna Caravan (rugged utility turboprop, up to 9 passengers, ~201 mph / 175 ktas, large 81 cu ft hold) is well suited to gravel strips and gear-heavy trips. The Citation CJ3 (light jet, up to 6 passengers, ~480 mph / 417 ktas) is for the jet leg into Tortola or St. Thomas, not into Virgin Gorda itself. The Challenger 350 (super midsize jet, up to 10 passengers, ~541 mph / 470 ktas) handles larger groups into St. Thomas or San Juan, then a transfer across
The key distinction at Virgin Gorda: turboprops can land on the island, jets cannot. Sailing and resort clients arriving with gear should plan around a turboprop directly into VIJ where the operator and payload allow, or a jet into a gateway with a boat transfer. Hogani Jets confirms which is feasible for the group and dates.
Virgin Gorda traffic splits between direct turboprop hops from the regional gateways and jet-plus-transfer routings from farther afield. All direct flights are by approved STOL turboprop into VIJ.
Route | Distance | Flight Time | Best Option |
|---|---|---|---|
Tortola (EIS) to Virgin Gorda (VIJ) | ~10–11 mi / 9 nm | ~10 min | STOL Turboprop, direct. Or short sea transfer |
St. Thomas (TIST) to Virgin Gorda | ~40 mi / 35 nm | ~15 to 20 min | STOL Turboprop direct, or jet to STT + transfer |
San Juan (TJSJ) to Virgin Gorda | ~103 miles / 89.5nm | ~45 to 60 min | STOL Turboprop direct, or jet to SJU + transfer |
Miami to Virgin Gorda (via gateway) | ~1,150 mi / 1,000 nm | ~3h + transfer | Jet to St. Thomas or San Juan, then sea or heli |
Charter to Virgin Gorda starts at $5,500+ one way for a turboprop hop from Tortola or St. Thomas, with longer regional turboprop routes and jet-plus-transfer itineraries rising from there. The transfer (sea or helicopter) and the regional aircraft scarcity are the main variables. All prices are starting points; the final quote reflects the specific aircraft, route, and transfer.
Route | Aircraft | One-Way Price | Passengers | Flight Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tortola to Virgin Gorda | STOL Turboprop | $5,500+ | Up to 10 | ~10 min |
St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda | STOL Turboprop | $6,500+ | Up to 10 | ~15 to 20 min |
San Juan to Virgin Gorda | STOL Turboprop | $9,000+ | Up to 10 | ~45 to 60 min |
Miami to Virgin Gorda (via gateway) | Jet + transfer | $19,000+ | Up to 9 | ~3h + transfer |
New York to Virgin Gorda (via gateway) | Jet + transfer | $34,000+ | Up to 10 | ~4h + transfer |
Prices reflect standard one-way charter starting rates including flight time, repositioning, fuel, crew, taxes, and BVI international handling fees. The sea or helicopter transfer is quoted separately. Final pricing depends on the specific aircraft, date, and availability.

Hourly Charter Rates by Aircraft Category
One-way charter prices include flight time plus repositioning, fuel, crew, taxes, and handling. The hourly rates below show the underlying cost per flight hour for each aircraft category. Note that jet rates apply to the gateway leg, since jets do not land at Virgin Gorda itself.
Aircraft Category | Hourly Rate | Example Aircraft |
|---|---|---|
Turboprop / STOL | $1,100 – $2,300/hr | King Air 350, Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan |
Light Jet (to gateway) | $2,300 - $3,800/hr | Citation CJ3, Phenom 300 |
Midsize Jet (to gateway) | $2,800 - $5,500/hr | Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP |
Super Midsize (to gateway) | $4,500 - $7,000/hr | Challenger 300, Challenger 350 |
Pricing Factors Specific to Virgin Gorda
- The unpaved, regulator-restricted airport limits direct access to a small pool of approved turboprop operators, which affects availability and price more than at a normal field.
- Most jet trips carry both a jet charter to a gateway and a separate sea or helicopter transfer, a two-cost structure unique to islands like this.
- BVI international handling and customs fees apply on arrival and departure as a foreign territory.
- Peak BVI winter and yacht-charter season tightens both turboprop availability and transfer capacity; book earlier in these windows.
Virgin Gorda operates year-round, with the BVI luxury and sailing season and weather shaping demand.
- Peak season (December through April): Best weather and highest luxury demand, the prime window for The Baths and North Sound. Book 3 to 6 weeks ahead, more for the holidays.
- Yacht-charter season: Strong winter demand around North Sound; confirm dates and book early, especially the limited turboprop access.
- Shoulder season (May and November): Favorable conditions with pricing below peak and better availability.
- Hurricane season (June through October): Caribbean weather risk, particularly August and September. The unpaved strip and sea transfers are weather-sensitive, so flexibility matters; a helicopter transfer is the most weather-resilient option.
This guide is written for travelers arriving by private charter. The focus is on the arrival-and-transfer sequence, where to stay, and the iconic Baths and North Sound experiences that define Virgin Gorda.
Where to Stay on Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda has one of the strongest luxury accommodation line-ups in the BVI, genuinely high-end and worth being precise about. The three below are the leading resort and estate options. Note that the nearby private islands are whole-island rentals, not hotels, covered separately.
Hotel / Resort | Setting | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Rosewood Little Dix Bay | Near Spanish Town | Luxury Resort | The island's flagship, a legendary Laurance Rockefeller resort beautifully restored by Rosewood, on a crescent beach. The benchmark luxury stay on Virgin Gorda. |
North Sound (boat/ heli) | Luxury Estate Resort | An ultra-exclusive resort and residence community at the island's remote eastern tip, reached by boat or helicopter, with villas, a beach club, and a marina. Among the most private luxury options in the BVI. | |
North Sound | Resort & Marina | A famous, rebuilt North Sound sailing resort and marina, accessible only by water, a legendary yachting destination with rooms and a vibrant marina village. |
Virgin Gorda is the most reliable luxury bench in the BVI: Rosewood Little Dix Bay is the flagship, Oil Nut Bay the ultra-private estate resort, and Bitter End the iconic North Sound yachting club. Several of the finest options, including Oil Nut Bay and Bitter End, are reached by boat, which Hogani Jets coordinates with the flight.
A Note on Necker Island and Mosquito Island
Two of the most famous names near Virgin Gorda, Necker Island and Mosquito Island, both owned by Richard Branson, are not hotels in the usual sense. They are private islands rented on a whole-island, exclusive-buyout basis, where guests book the entire island rather than a room. They are extraordinary but operate as private-estate charters; Hogani Jets can coordinate the flight and transfer for such a stay, with the island booking handled directly through its own channels.
Places to Visit on Virgin Gorda
The following spots are the most requested by visitors.
- The Baths: Virgin Gorda's world-famous landscape of giant granite boulders forming sea pools, grottoes, and tunnels along the shore. The island's signature attraction.
- North Sound: A spectacular protected bay and one of the Caribbean's great yachting enclaves, home to Bitter End and Oil Nut Bay, reached by water.
- Spanish Town and the Yacht Harbour: The island's main settlement and marina, near Rosewood Little Dix Bay and the gateway to The Baths.
- Gorda Peak National Park: The island's high point, with rainforest trails and panoramic views across the BVI.
- Spring Bay and Devil's Bay: Beautiful boulder-fringed beaches near The Baths, quieter and equally striking.
Activities That Affect Flight Planning
- Scuba diving and snorkeling: FAA recommends a 24-hour interval between diving and flying. Schedule dive days at least 24 hours before the departure flight.
- Sailing and yacht charters: Multi-day trips should be planned around the departure with a buffer day and time for the transfer back to the gateway.
- The Baths and beach days: No flight planning impact, but allow for the sea or air transfer on departure day.
Practical Considerations
The British Virgin Islands uses the U.S. dollar, so no currency exchange is required, but it is a foreign territory: a passport is mandatory for all travelers, including U.S. citizens, with BVI customs and immigration. Much of Virgin Gorda's luxury, especially North Sound, is reached by water, so boat transfers are a normal part of the experience. Driving is on the left. Medical facilities handle routine cases, with serious events transferred to Tortola, St. Thomas, or the U.S. mainland.
Matt's Recommendation
Virgin Gorda is one of my favourite luxury islands, The Baths, Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Oil Nut Bay, the North Sound, it is a special place. But the airport is the catch: it is a short, unpaved gravel strip, and the authorities only let a handful of approved small turboprop operators in there, so no jets, full stop. So I do one of two things: a small King Air or Caravan straight onto the island if the operator and load work, or, more often for a bigger group or a jet from the mainland, I fly them into St. Thomas or Tortola and put them on a boat or a helicopter across, which for North Sound is often the nicest way anyway. And it is the BVI, so everyone needs a passport, including my U.S. clients. Necker and Mosquito, by the way, are whole-island rentals, not hotels, a different kind of booking entirely.

Can private jets land directly in Virgin Gorda?
No. Virgin Gorda Airport (VIJ / TUPW) has a 3,100 ft (945 m) unpaved sand-and-gravel runway restricted by regulators to a small group of approved operators, so only small STOL turboprops land there, not jets. Jet clients fly into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan and transfer to Virgin Gorda by sea or helicopter.
How do you get to Virgin Gorda by private charter?
Two ways: a small approved STOL turboprop directly into VIJ from a regional gateway such as Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan, or a jet into one of those gateways followed by a private boat, ferry, or helicopter transfer. For most luxury and larger-group travel, the gateway-and-transfer route is the practical one.
How much does a private jet charter to Virgin Gorda cost?
Charter to Virgin Gorda starts at $5,500+ for a turboprop hop from Tortola, $6,500+ from St. Thomas, and $9,000+ from San Juan. Jet-plus-transfer itineraries from Miami start around $19,000+ and from New York around $34,000+, with the sea or helicopter transfer quoted separately. Final pricing depends on aircraft, date, and availability.
What is the runway length at Virgin Gorda Airport?
Virgin Gorda Airport has a 3,100 ft (945 m) unpaved sand-and-gravel runway (03/21). It was rebuilt in 2010 and is restricted to a small set of operators approved by the BVI and FAA regulators, which is why only small STOL turboprops can use it.
Why can't jets land at Virgin Gorda?
The runway is short at 3,100 ft, unpaved (sand and gravel), and limited by regulators to specifically approved small-aircraft operators. Those conditions rule out jets of any category. Jet travelers fly into Tortola, St. Thomas, or San Juan and transfer across by boat or helicopter.
Do I need a passport to fly private to Virgin Gorda?
Yes. The British Virgin Islands is a foreign territory, so a valid passport is required for all travelers, including U.S. citizens, unlike the neighbouring U.S. Virgin Islands. BVI customs and immigration apply on arrival.
Which aircraft can fly into Virgin Gorda?
Only small STOL turboprops approved for the unpaved strip, of the King Air, Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan, and Twin Otter class. Jets do not operate at VIJ. For a jet, the aircraft lands at a nearby gateway and passengers transfer to Virgin Gorda.
Where should I stay on Virgin Gorda?
Virgin Gorda has a strong luxury line-up: Rosewood Little Dix Bay is the flagship resort, Oil Nut Bay an ultra-private estate resort, and Bitter End Yacht Club the iconic North Sound sailing resort. The nearby Necker and Mosquito Islands are whole-island private rentals rather than hotels.
Are Necker Island and Mosquito Island hotels?
No. Necker Island and Mosquito Island, both owned by Richard Branson and near Virgin Gorda, are private islands rented on a whole-island, exclusive-buyout basis rather than by the room. Hogani Jets can coordinate the flight and transfer for such a stay, with the island booking handled through its own channels.
Is Hogani Jets a direct air carrier?
No. Hogani Jets is an air charter broker and does not own or operate aircraft. All charters are facilitated through licensed Part 135 direct air carriers who maintain full operational control and regulatory compliance for every flight.
