Private Jet Charter to Tulum: Tulum International (TQO), Cancun or Cozumel

  4. Private Jet Charter to Tulum: Tulum International (TQO), Cancun or Cozumel

Turboprop time on a private jet charter to Tulum costs $1,300 to $2,500 an hour. Light jets cost from $2,300, up to $3,800. Most trips land at Tulum International Airport (MMTL / TQO). Its concrete runway 12/30 is 12,139 feet, long enough for any aircraft.

The military-run airport's general aviation terminal is staffed 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Cancun International (CUN) is the larger fallback, about 69 miles north. Hogani Jets coordinates every charter through licensed Part 135 operators or carriers approved by the applicable aviation authority.

Alternatives

Cancun International (MMUN / CUN), Cozumel International (MMCZ / CZM)

  • Cancun International (MMUN / CUN): 11,483 ft (12R/30L), elevation 20 ft, with a separate private aviation terminal. About 1.5 to 3 hr by road to Tulum.
  • Cozumel International (MMCZ / CZM): 10,165 ft (05/23), elevation 15 ft, on Cozumel island. Reaching Tulum means a ferry to Playa del Carmen, then the drive south.

Tulum's new airport opened to commercial flights on December 1, 2023, 13 miles southwest of town. It replaced the long road transfer from Cancun with a drive of about half an hour. On a private jet Tulum trip, Cancun and Cozumel still matter outside the private terminal's hours.

A private jet to Tulum lands close to the beach hotels instead of at Cancun's crowded airline terminals. The Riviera Maya sits within two hours of Miami, Houston, and Atlanta by light jet. Families carry dive gear and surfboards without bag fees. Wellness retreats, cenotes and Maya ruins fill most trips.

  • Shortest transfer: TQO is 13 miles from town; Cancun is about 69.
  • Customs at the private terminal: international arrivals clear at TQO's general aviation building.
  • Eastern clock: Quintana Roo keeps UTC-5 all year, the same as New York in winter.

A Tulum International Airport private jet arrival suits most trips, 13 miles from town on a 12,139-foot runway. Cancun suits late arrivals and trips that start in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Cozumel adds a ferry crossing. Each choice changes the drive more than the flight.

How long is the drive from Cancun airport to Tulum?

Driving from Cancun International Airport to Tulum takes 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road works. Tulum International is far closer, about 30 to 35 minutes from town. Peak traffic adds up to 30 minutes from TQO. Hotels on the beach road take about 45 minutes.

Matt's Recommendation

If the jet lands at TQO in daylight, use it. Cancun only wins on a late arrival.

Yes, Tulum International has customs and immigration on site at its general aviation terminal. That terminal is staffed in daytime hours only, closing at 7 p.m. Clearing an international arrival typically takes 35 to 50 minutes there. Because the army runs the airport, procedures differ slightly from Cancun's.

What is different about flying a private jet into Tulum's military airport?

Tulum International is built and run by a company owned by the Mexican military. Its private terminal is the only general aviation building on the field, with on-site inspection officers. When it opened in 2023, international private arrivals needed 48 hours' notice. Operators still confirm customs timing before quoting.

A private jet Miami to Tulum flight takes about 1 hour 35 minutes by light jet, Opa-Locka to TQO. Houston is about 2 hours away, and Dallas about 2 hours 25 minutes. From Teterboro, a private jet New York to Tulum trip takes about 3 hours 30 minutes by midsize jet. Chicago Midway takes about 3 hours 15 minutes.

  • Atlanta Peachtree: about 2 hours 20 minutes in a light jet.
  • Washington Dulles: roughly 3 hours 10 minutes by midsize jet.
  • Toronto: a super midsize needs about 3 hours 30 minutes.
  • Van Nuys: about 4 hours 20 minutes in a super midsize, nonstop.

  • Passports: A valid passport is required for each traveler on board. Non-US citizens should confirm Mexico's visa rules for their nationality.
  • Arrivals from the south: flights from the Caribbean, Central America or South America first clear at Cozumel or Tapachula.
  • Inspection: bags leave the aircraft for screening, and sniffer dogs may check them.
  • Visitor fee: Mexico's non-resident charge applies to foreign guests, 983 pesos in 2026.
  • Charter permits: the foreign operator files its Mexican permit, so peak weeks need early booking.

Most flights home from Tulum clear US customs in South Florida. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach take arrivals from the south without an overflight exemption.

Operators with an exemption may continue to customs nearer home. CBP must receive the eAPIS manifest before takeoff from Mexico.

Yes, operators carry dogs and cats to Tulum once they approve the pet. Since August 3, 2026, Mexico requires a screwworm certificate for dogs, signed by a USDA-accredited vet within 5 days. Cats travel without paperwork but face inspection on arrival. Coming home, dogs need a microchip and the CDC import form receipt.

The cost of a private jet to Tulum depends mostly on the city you leave from. Florida trips take under two hours, so a light jet keeps the total low. Christmas, New Year, and spring break fill aircraft first. Late arrivals routed to Cancun add a longer drive, not a higher fare.

  • Departure region: the Northeast and Midwest usually need a midsize jet.
  • Arrival time: landing after the private terminal closes needs advance arrangement.
  • Customs on the return: a South Florida stop is often on the way anyway.
  • Empty return: a one-way quote may include the jet's flight back to base.

What is the cheapest private charter to Tulum?

The cheapest private charter to Tulum is a turboprop from Miami-Opa Locka, about 2 hours 10 minutes to TQO. Expect roughly $2,800 to $5,400 one way, excluding taxes and fees. Choosing a light jet saves about 35 minutes for $3,600 to $6,000.

What is the best private jet charter to Tulum?

The best private jet charter to Tulum for most groups is a light jet like the Citation CJ4. It flies nonstop from Florida, Texas and Atlanta and seats 6 to 9. New York and Chicago families with more luggage usually pick a Citation Latitude midsize.

Empty leg flights to Tulum appear when an aircraft heads south without passengers to pick up a returning group. Most turn up after New Year and at the end of spring break. They cost less than a full charter. The schedule belongs to the original trip, so it can shift.

For current Tulum legs, email charter@hoganijets.com with your travel window and party size, or call +1-855-660-0573.

The best time to fly private to Tulum is December to April, the dry season with clean beaches. Sargassum seaweed builds from April and peaks from June to August. The Atlantic storm season lasts from June 1 through November 30, and September carries the most risk. Holiday weeks book out first.

Is sargassum a problem in Tulum?

Sargassum is a seasonal problem in Tulum, mainly from late spring through summer. The seaweed starts building in April and is historically worst from June to August. It eases in September and October, and beaches are usually clear from December to March.

Most private flyers stay in Tulum's beach hotel zone or on the coast just north of town. The beach zone is about 45 minutes from TQO. Resorts near Playa del Carmen sit closer to Cancun than to Tulum. The three hotels below cover both areas.

Tulum pairs a cliff-top Maya site with cenotes, jungle and a long white beach. The ruins overlook the Caribbean just north of the hotel zone. Inland, freshwater cenotes such as Gran Cenote suit swimming and snorkeling. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve begins south of town.

  • Tulum ruins: the walled Maya city above the sea.
  • Cenotes: Gran Cenote and Cenote Calavera for swimming.
  • Sian Ka'an: a UNESCO-listed reserve of lagoons and mangroves.
  • Cobá: a larger inland Maya site, a day trip by car.
  • Wellness: yoga, spa and retreat stays along the beach road.

  • Retreat check-in times: plan a daylight landing at TQO to reach the hotel the same evening.
  • Dive trips: plan a full day without diving before the flight home.
  • Cozumel side trips: a short hop from TQO avoids the ferry.
  • Hurricane months: keep one free day in the plan from August to October.

Quintana Roo stays on UTC-5 all year, matching Chicago in summer and New York in winter. Prices are in Mexican pesos, though US dollars are widely quoted in hotels. Each traveler needs a valid passport.

Book TQO arrivals early in the day during holiday weeks.

Every Tulum private jet charter starts with the arrival time, since TQO's private terminal closes at 7 p.m. The right airport, Mexican permits and the Florida customs stop home are then built in. Founder Matt Hogan has planned over 2,000 private flights in 90-plus countries.

Every operator's Part 135 certificate, insurance coverage, and safety record is independently reviewed before booking, with ARGUS, Wyvern, or IS-BAO ratings considered where they exist as one part of that review.

  • Airport set by arrival time: TQO by day, Cancun after hours.
  • Customs timing confirmed: TQO clearance checked with the handler before the quote.
  • Return mapped: South Florida customs and the eAPIS manifest planned in advance.
