What Happens to Your Luggage on a Private Jet?

Private jets have no commercial baggage restrictions. Bags travel from your vehicle directly into the aircraft hold. There is no check-in counter, no oversize fees, and no weight limit on individual items. The only limit is the aircraft's total payload capacity: passengers, bags, and fuel combined. For standard charter bookings, this limit is rarely a practical concern. Bags are always on the same aircraft as you. On arrival, bags come directly from the hold to your vehicle. There is no baggage carousel and no waiting.

Luggage handling is one of the clearest practical differences between private jet travel and commercial aviation. Steps that consume 20 to 40 minutes on a commercial journey simply do not exist on a private charter. Check-in, bag drop, and baggage claim are eliminated.

You arrive at the FBO by vehicle. The ground handler or a crew member meets you and takes your bags from the vehicle. The bags are carried or wheeled to the aircraft and loaded into the hold. You walk into the FBO lobby. From the vehicle door to your bags being loaded takes approximately 5 minutes for a typical group.

There is no check-in desk, no bag tag, no weighing machine, and no security conveyor belt. You do not interact with your bags again until arrival.

On arrival at the destination FBO, the ground handlers unload the bags from the aircraft hold while you deplane. By the time you reach the FBO exit, your bags are typically already staged at the vehicle or being brought to meet you. The total time from the aircraft door to the vehicle with bags is 5 to 10 minutes.

There is no baggage carousel, no baggage claim hall, no waiting for a specific flight's bags to appear. Your bags were on your aircraft. They arrive when you arrive.

The lost luggage risk on a private jet is effectively zero for the aircraft stage of the journey. Your bags are loaded onto your specific aircraft at the departure FBO and unloaded at the arrival FBO. They cannot be misrouted, placed on the wrong aircraft, or left behind at a hub.

The risk of luggage loss exists only in the ground transport on either end, not in the air. For clients who have experienced commercial lost luggage on important trips, private charter eliminates this risk for the flight itself.

Commercial RestrictionPrivate Jet Status
Checked bag weight limit (typically 23 kg / 50 lbs per bag)No per-bag weight limit on private jets
Oversize bag feeNo oversize fees on private jets
Carry-on size restriction (cabin bag dimensions)No carry-on size restriction on private jets
Liquid restriction (3-1-1 rule, 100ml limit)No liquid restriction applies. See the Security page.
Number of bags fee (second bag charges)No fee for additional bags
Sports equipment fee (golf, ski, bicycle)No sports equipment surcharge; items travel in hold
Musical instrument rules (must fit overhead bin)Instruments can travel in hold or cabin without restriction

The only limit is the aircraft's total payload capacity. This is the combined weight of passengers, baggage, and fuel for a specific flight. For the vast majority of charter bookings with standard group sizes and luggage, this limit is never reached.

Hogani Jets confirms hold dimensions and payload capacity for any booking where large or heavy items are involved.

Every aircraft has a hold with specific dimensions. Most personal luggage, even large suitcases and duffel bags, fits without difficulty in midsize and above holds. The hold dimensions become relevant for unusual items.

Aircraft CategoryHold Volume (approx.)Max Bag DimensionsNotes
Very Light Jet15 to 25 cu ftStandard suitcasesLimited; 2 to 4 standard bags. Confirm at booking for larger groups.
Light Jet40 to 60 cu ftStandard to large suitcasesComfortable for 4 to 6 passengers with typical luggage.
Midsize Jet80 to 100 cu ftLarge suitcases and golf bagsAccommodates a foursome's golf equipment or standard ski gear.
Super Midsize100 to 150 cu ftVery large items possibleCan handle most group luggage including sports equipment.
Heavy Jet150 to 200+ cu ftLarge irregular itemsSignificant hold space; most items fit without concern.

Golf Clubs

Golf bags travel in the hold of midsize jets and above without oversize fees or restrictions. A foursome's four golf bags fit comfortably in a midsize jet hold. Hogani Jets confirms hold dimensions against club bag sizes for any route where space may be tighter. This includes light jet bookings with a larger group.

Ski Equipment

Ski bags (typically 180 to 200 cm in length) travel in the hold of midsize and above aircraft. Most ski bags exceed the size of standard luggage but are within hold dimensions for midsize jets. Boot bags and poles travel alongside without issue.

Musical Instruments

Small instruments (violins, guitars, wind instruments in cases) can travel in the cabin on a dedicated seat. Larger instruments (cello, double bass, keyboard) travel in the hold. For high-value instruments, in-cabin transport provides direct custody. Hogani Jets confirms whether in-cabin transport is feasible for the specific instrument at booking.

Bicycles and Large Sports Equipment

Bicycles and large sporting items require confirmation of hold dimensions at booking. Most heavy jets accommodate a boxed bicycle. Midsize jets may require the bicycle to be partially disassembled. Surfboards and similar items that exceed hold dimensions may not be accommodatable.

Fragile items (electronics, glassware, artwork, instruments) that require careful handling should be carried in the cabin where possible. In the hold, items experience the same pressurised and temperature-controlled environment as the cabin. However, they are subject to the movement of loading and unloading.

Items that cannot be damaged by standard handling (suitcases, duffel bags, sports equipment cases) go in the hold. Items that could be damaged by a shift during loading are better in the cabin under your direct oversight. For very high-value items such as fine art, the Fine Art and Valuables Charter page covers specialist transit protocols.

On international flights, baggage is subject to customs inspection on arrival. Passengers complete a CBP customs declaration form covering all items being brought into the country. CBP officers may inspect the hold and cabin on US returns from international destinations.

Prohibited items under US customs regulations apply regardless of aircraft type. These include certain foods, agricultural products, undeclared goods, and items over duty-free limits. Private charter does not provide customs exemption. The process occurs at the FBO rather than a commercial terminal, but the same customs rules apply.

For any group with unusual luggage requirements, large items, or sports equipment, contact Hogani Jets at booking. Hold dimensions will be confirmed against what you are carrying.

What happens to your luggage on a private jet?

Bags go from your vehicle directly into the aircraft hold. There is no check-in counter, no bag tags, and no security conveyor. On arrival, bags come directly to your vehicle. There is no baggage carousel.

Is there a baggage weight limit on a private jet?

No per-bag weight limit applies on private jets. No oversize fees, no second-bag charges, and no sports equipment surcharges. The only limit is total payload capacity. For standard bookings, this is rarely a practical concern.

Can I bring golf clubs or ski equipment on a private jet?

Yes. Golf bags and ski equipment travel in the hold without oversize fees. A foursome's golf bags fit comfortably in a midsize jet hold. Ski bags (180 to 200 cm) travel in midsize and above holds.

Is there a carry-on size restriction on a private jet?

No. The commercial carry-on dimension rules do not apply on private jets. Items of any size can travel in the cabin as long as they fit. There is no overhead bin size check and no gate-check requirement.

Can luggage get lost on a private jet?

Effectively zero for the air stage. Bags are loaded onto your specific aircraft and unloaded at the arrival FBO. They cannot be misrouted. Loss risk exists only in ground transport on either end.

Is there a baggage carousel on arrival at a private jet?

No. Bags come off the aircraft as you deplane and are brought to your vehicle. The process takes 5 to 10 minutes from door to vehicle. There is no carousel, no claim hall, and no waiting.

Can musical instruments travel on a private jet?

Yes. Small instruments can travel in the cabin on a dedicated seat. Larger instruments travel in the hold. In-cabin transport provides direct custody for high-value pieces. Hogani Jets confirms feasibility at booking.

What is the private jet hold capacity?

Very light jets hold 15 to 25 cubic feet, fitting 2 to 4 bags. Light jets offer 40 to 60 cubic feet. Midsize jets hold 80 to 100 cubic feet. Heavy jets carry 150 or more. Hogani Jets confirms dimensions for unusual items at booking.

Can I bring fragile items in the hold of a private jet?

Fragile items are better in the cabin where possible. The hold is pressurized and temperature-controlled, but items experience the movement of loading and unloading. Electronics and glassware that could be damaged by a shift are safer in the cabin.

Does private jet luggage go through customs differently?

The same customs rules apply. On US international returns, CBP officers may inspect the hold and cabin at the FBO. Passengers complete CBP declaration forms. Prohibited items and duty limits are identical to commercial arrival.
