A private jet to Banff costs $1,300 to $2,500 per hour by turboprop. A light jet costs $2,300 to $3,800 per hour. The Banff airstrip inside the park takes emergency landings only. So charters land at Calgary/Springbank (CYBW), a 75-minute drive from town. Midsize jets and larger use Calgary International, about 95 minutes out. Book early for the ski season and summer peak. Hogani Jets coordinates every charter through licensed Part 135 operators or carriers approved by the applicable aviation authority.

Banff National Park, founded in 1885, was Canada's first national park and the world's third. It became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The townsite sits at 4,537 feet, the highest town in Canada. Three ski areas, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Mt Norquay, sell a shared SkiBig3 pass.

Rates shown are hourly charter rates by aircraft category. Your quote shows one all-in price, including taxes, permits, and handling.

Banff draws ski families, wedding parties, and corporate retreats all year. Airline passengers queue at the main Calgary terminal, then face the drive west. A charter lands at a quieter gateway, and the car is waiting at the aircraft.

  • Shorter drive: Springbank sits on Calgary's west side, about 20 minutes closer to Banff than the main airport.
  • Customs on arrival: Springbank clears groups of up to 15, so US flights land there directly.
  • Same-day trips work: a morning flight in and an evening flight home fit a site visit or ski day.

What is the closest airport to Banff for a private jet?

For charter flights, Springbank (CYBW) is Banff's nearest legal airport, a 75-minute drive west. Its 5,000-foot runway suits turboprops and light jets. Bigger jets need Calgary International, about 20 minutes farther out.

Springbank is a busy general aviation airport with flight schools, helicopter firms, and firefighting aircraft. Its longer runway was extended to 5,000 feet in 2006. The operator selects the handler, and Hogani Jets confirms it in your trip details. From the ramp, the Trans-Canada Highway runs straight west to the park gate.

Matt's Recommendation

For Banff, Springbank is my first choice. It is closer to the mountains and clears customs for small groups. We only switch to Calgary International for bigger jets or groups over 15.

Not into the park, but you can fly nonstop to its gateways from most of North America. Where you land depends on group size and aircraft.

  • US flights with 15 or fewer passengers: land at Springbank and clear customs there.
  • Groups over 15: land at Calgary International, which handles customs for any group size.
  • Midsize jets and larger: plan on Calgary International for runway margin.
  • From Europe: ultra-long-range jets fly nonstop to Calgary International, then drive west.

Note:
Prices are standard one-way estimates based on the hourly rate of the suggested aircraft category. Flights under 1 hour are shown at a 1-hour minimum. Positioning, landing, handling, de-icing, and customs costs are not included here and are added to your final all-in quote.

  • Passports: every passenger needs a valid passport. Non-US citizens should check Canadian entry rules for their nationality.
  • eTA: visa-exempt visitors flying in, other than US citizens, apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization first.
  • Customs limit: Springbank clears up to 15 passengers; bigger groups enter through Calgary International.
  • Park pass: anyone stopping in Banff, including the townsite, needs a Parks Canada pass.

Banff Airport (CYBA) sits about 3 km northeast of town, inside the national park. After roughly a decade closed, it reopened in 2007 for emergency and diversionary landings only. Any other landing needs a Parks Canada permit. Helicopter transfers cannot land in the park either, and recreational drones are banned.

Can a private jet land at Banff Airport (CYBA)?

No. Banff Airport is a grass strip reserved for emergency and diversionary landings under Parks Canada rules. Charter jets land at Springbank (CYBW) or, for larger aircraft, Calgary International.

Yes. A rabies certificate covers dogs and cats over three months old arriving from the US, with no quarantine. Pets from elsewhere follow other CFIA rules. In Banff National Park, dogs must be leashed and under physical control at all times.

  • Gateway choice: Springbank limits aircraft size, so a big group may need Calgary International.
  • Group size: over 15 passengers means customs at Calgary International, not Springbank.
  • Holiday weeks: Christmas, New Year, and March break see the strongest demand.
  • Length of stay: on a same-day trip, the crew waits; on longer stays, the jet may fly home and return.
  • Winter departures: de-icing may be needed on cold mornings and is added to the quote.

A Banff quote rolls flight hours, any positioning, and handling into one figure. Prices are in US dollars, with Canadian airport charges converted into that total.

Banff's busiest weeks end with jets heading home empty. After a Saturday changeover at Springbank or Calgary International, many aircraft return to US bases without passengers. Those legs sell one way at reduced prices, usually at short notice.

The town has only about 3,700 hotel rooms, and federal law fixes its boundaries, so supply cannot grow. For large groups, splitting stays between Banff and Lake Louise eases the squeeze.

  • Banff Gondola: a cabin ride up Sulphur Mountain, with a boardwalk along the summit ridge.
  • Banff Upper Hot Springs: a hot mineral pool with views across the valley.
  • Moraine Lake: closed to personal vehicles, so arrive by Parks Canada shuttle or a licensed tour.
  • Johnston Canyon: catwalks to waterfalls on the Bow Valley Parkway, a pass-required road.
  • Lake Louise: a turquoise glacier lake about 45 minutes northwest of town.

  • Film and photo shoots: spare lithium batteries must be declared to the operator before departure.
  • Ski groups: count ski and boot bags when choosing between a light jet and a super midsize.
  • Drone owners: recreational drone flights are prohibited in all national parks, so leave the drone at home.

Local time in Banff is Mountain Time, and hotels and shops charge in Canadian dollars. Buy your park pass online or at the East Gate on the Trans-Canada Highway. Inside the park, fences and wildlife overpasses line much of the highway, yet elk still wander through town.

Hogani Jets is an air charter broker that plans Banff trips around the park's landing rules. Matt Hogan, the founder, has organized over 2,000 private flights across more than 90 countries. For a VIP private jet charter to Banff, that means the right gateway, customs, and car.

Every operator's Part 135 certificate, insurance coverage, and safety record is independently reviewed before booking, with ARGUS, Wyvern, or IS-BAO ratings considered where they exist as one part of that review.

  • Gateway matched to group: Springbank for 15 or fewer, Calgary International for more.
  • Lake Louise planned in: drive times quoted to your hotel, not just the townsite.
  • Season-ready: ski bags, de-icing, and holiday-week demand built into the plan.
